The Northern Utah Division of the NMRA loves to host Model Railroad Train Shows, which are one of the highlights of our events calendar. We usually host these shows one or more times a year, providing a platform for model railroaders and enthusiasts to showcase their layouts and share their love of the hobby with others.
We keep all of our Train Show information up to date here on our website, where you can find dates, locations, and links to sign up for upcoming events. Whether you are a seasoned model railroader or just starting out, we invite you to come join the fun and experience the excitement of our Train Shows firsthand. We hope to see you at our next event!
Our Train Shows are a fun and engaging experience for all ages, featuring a variety of layouts, vendors, and demonstrations. Visitors can explore different eras, scales, and styles of model railroading, and learn more about the art and science of building and operating their own layouts. Some of our exhibitors are geared for young people to have a hands-on experience.

We are back to the Intermountain Train Expo in the Salt Lake City area for 2023. This show (as always) was GREAT!!! Lots of trains. Lots of clubs. Lots of kids. (Lots of grandparents too) This show is put on by the Northern Utah Division of the NMRA who have had this November show for decades. Always a GREAT TIME for everyone.
We were off to the 2022 Intermountain Train Show.
This year in Layton Utah! The NMRA train show is Utah's oldest train show. Originally the show was held at the Utah State Fair Grounds. Now called The Fair Park. For years though it has been moving around while staying on the Wasatch Front, the greater Salt Lake City metro area.
As always this was a fun show!!
One of the most EXCITING tables was the Golden Spike Model Railroad Club. Another very old Utah tradition. Originally they were also at the Utah State Fair Grounds but with renovations, they were forced to move. They started over in the basement of the Wasatch Warm Springs pool. The railroad was actually UNDER the pool. The pool had been closed for years but was reopened as the Children's Museum and the railroad was part of that. Well... the Children's Museum moved to a better space but well... the layout needed to stay right there under the old pool. This worked out well however until....
The earthquake in 2020. The old building was badly damaged and the club was locked out. Eventually, they were allowed back in to rescue trains and a few things, but once more needed to start over. They now have a new space in an art space downtown! And we are invited to take a look!
We are taking a break from modeling and railfanning to go off and see some train shows!! First up, The Intermountain Train Expo...
A bit of history: This very old train show has gone by other names. It is, and has always been, put on by the local NMRA division in Salt Lake City, or should we say the Wasatch Front area.
For years it was held at the Utah State Fair Grounds. AND there was a local club, the Golden Spike Model Railroad Club with a large and wonderful layout in its own building there. So a FANTASTIC train show. And HUGE!! And just before Thanksgiving, an annual tradition for thousands. Or really tens of thousands. Well, time marches on... And the Fair Grounds were restored and rebuilt, the costs went up, the Golden Spike club was asked to remove to the Children's Museum UNDER an abandoned swimming pool.
And so, the show moved on. And has been in several venues since. (As a sad side note, the Golden Spike layoud area was distroied in the 2020 earthquake) They now have a modular layout.
Anyway, still here, still moving on, the Intermountain Train Show was held this year in Davis County north of Salt Lake City.
This show has always involved children. The goal to expand the hobby. So they have a "kids area" where boys and girls switch a "timesaver" layout, build layouts, build trees, race trains and just have FUN.
Also many modular layouts. Lego, Lionel, American Flyer, HO, N, O, its all here. Dealers and people trading trains and many other things for sale.
For decades the Northern Utah Division of the NMRA has put on one of the west's most successful train shows. Once held at the Utah State Fair Grounds, today the show is held in the huge South Town Expo Center.
The Intermountain Train Expo has altered it's format to become a kid friendly "hands on" experience where kids get to build and run their own trains.
There are also the usual modular train clubs, The Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club from Cheyenne Wyoming was here, as was the Wasatch N Scalers who will be helping to host the The National N Scale Convention presented by the N Scale Enthusiast magazine in June of 2017. As well as other modular train groups and clubs here showing there work and screwing around with trains!!
This show has always been part of the Christmas season in Salt Lake City, and thousands bring their kids to see if the kids have interest in trains.
The Intermountain Train Expo moved to the SouthTown Expo Center in 2016. Attracting railroad clubs and dealers from all over the western US. After decades at the Utah State Fair Grounds, the train show has moved to a bigger and better facility with great results!!
